Raced at Montlhéry, Spa and the Nürburgring Nordschliefe, center-seat Porsche RSK 718-028 is one of few cars eligible for both the most prestigious sports car races and to compete in historic Formula 2 where envelope coachwork was accepted by the FIA in 1957-58.

John Higgins thinks the light, balanced RSK 718-028 would be a delight on the tight, intricate Monaco GP Historique circuit where, with its unusual center-steering, it should be eligible as a Formula 2 car.

Uh, yes....I’d throw it around Monaco for a few laps.

You get it all, including the finned brakes.

Offered here with its complete original drivetrain, original Wendler coachwork and as-raced when it was new with Porsche’s fantastically efficient helically-finned drum brakes, RSK 718-028 is a well-preserved, fabulously-maintained, meticulously-prepared vintage racing time capsule. Now configured with center-steering, the seating configuration remains adaptable to both center- and offset-steering.

There was a gent I ’ v e h e a r d o f ... q uite a character, n o t e x a c t l y u n i v e r s a l l y - l o v e d . Former jet fighter pilot , amateur racer, s o metime manufacturer of small-series sportscars and replicas, i mpo r t e r , collector and general wheeler-dealer of high-end e x o t i c a .

He had an RSK in his living room, atop a glass table. Allegedly, in the l a t e 7 0 s / very early 80s a Swiss collector h a d wanted to buy it and made t h e proverbial blank cheque offer, which was promptly refused.

I wonder w h e t h e r t h i s p a r t i c ular car c o u l d h a v e b e e n his ; m a y b e years later, when the market went truly stratopheric , s o m e o ne managed to convince him t o s e l l .

As far as I understand, t his car has been vintage raced for the last 20 years and before that it was in storage. I doubt it was sitting on a coffee table, but you never know.

I believe this is the current owner, racing the car as he’s done at every single Rennsport Reunion. Good stuff.....

He owns this place:

Again, I could be wrong and it could be someone else.  I’m just an OppoNut.

I just realized the event you were referring to was in the 70's/80's......in which case this could be the same car, but the previous owner who sold it in the 90's. He also lived in Ohio but I don’t know any more than that.

Here’s the history, which also notes that John may not be the owner, just a co-driver. See, I told you I could have been wrong. I like your story better anyway!!!!

718-028’s subsequent history is obscure but in the early 90’s it was sequestered in a Dayton, Ohio garage in the care of a well-known car-sleuth noted for discovering and preserving epic Mercedes-Benzes of the Thirties.

It was remarkable that then, after years of competition, it retained its original Typ 547/3 engine, transaxle and its original Wendler bodywork.

It languished there until 1993 when the consignor – a prominent Ohio based collector of exceptional European sports cars – finally pried it from its owner’s possession in a trade that involved a BMW 507 and a pair of Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs, a Roadster and a Gullwing Coupe.

The new custodian tried vintage racing 718-028, but concluded it wasn’t as easy as it appeared, enlisting a business partner and experienced Porsche historic racer, John Higgins, to realize 718-028’s potential.

May this have been the one that appeared in Excellence , years ago? Fascinating machine, in any case.

On the other hand, I wonder what happened to the “glass table” RSK ; I never heard again of that particular car , but then t h i s guy wa s n o t e x a c t l y f o nd of t a l k i ng a b out w h at he had b ou g h t or sold.

H e d i e d a r o u n d t e n y e a r s a g o , a n d I s uspect his rather fab u l o u s c o l l ection (with a f e w u n i q u e , b i g - n a m e c o a c h b u i l t p i e c e s ) was sold off n o t so long afterward.

A quick search of the RSK in Excellence was not the same one...I believe a Dutch driver died in that one.  Now it’s my quest to find The Coffee Table RSK.   To be featured in a new blog, Cars and Coffee Tables.
